Back in undergrad, I’d say sophomore year of my apparel design program, I had a sewing project due—one of many. Only problem was, I was a procrastinator. (To be honest, I still struggle with procrastination.) So, of course, I waited until the last minute to get started ONLY TO FIND OUT MY SEWING MACHINE STOPPED WORKING! Time to panic… I struggled with the machine to no avail. What’s next? Good thing my Mom and Grandma taught me how to sew, because this project was getting sewn by hand, period. And no worries, your girl was meticulous with it. I’d been hand-sewing since I was seven-years-old. My seams were straight and each stitch uniform to the next. I took pride in my work.
Since my bad, old companion procrastination could never fail me, I was on the campus bus on my way to class, sewing my last stitches en route. I stepped off the bus and rushed to class. Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I was one of the first students in the room. I guess everyone else procrastinated too.
I sat and waited as the room filled with the other students. The instructor finally came in. Presentations began, and didn’t my Yah show up? Yes. He. Did! All I remember is the professor basically being disappointed at the overall quality of the students’ work. But guess what? She loved my work. She even lauded it as exemplary. I can’t even say it to brag; it was my Father showing up for me in my mess. HalleluYah.
I told the professor my sewing machine was broken. She couldn’t believe my project was completed by hand! Yah used my situation to let me shine—in spite of my shortcomings. He is awesome!
